We never stopped loving the Ramones, Devo, Lords of the New Church, & others.
As a San Franciscan teenager in the 1980s, I loved the many forms of New Wave: punk, gothic, rockabilly, power pop, "alternative", ska, psychobilly, new romantics, and so on.
The group is small for two reasons:
1. I frequently delete innactive members, so they won't waste my time & the Meetup's bandwidth. All new members are on 'probationary status' until they answer emails or show up in person, and should volunteer their phone number or email to confirm they're genuine. I've no patience for flakes and empty profiles. So if you join this group, please introduce yourself personally and be sure I have your contact information. Members who fail to prove they're a real person will be kicked out.
2. Let's face it; if you grew up on these types of tunes, you're no kid! In this age of monotonous techno/rave garbage, what young dorky clubgoer wants to hear music with real drums? Yes, we're an aging minority; clubgoers who rock (remember that?). Even so, we geezers stomach the local clubs almost every month, and still remember the guitars and genuine drum-beats of a decade that rocked.
Sadly, Obscura might still be the best thing going on in the Phoenix area. But the members of The Gilbert New Wave Meetup Group are starting to feel alienated in a place where the music is conforming more towards hours of techno & whimp-pop remixes instead of a deverse variety to keep everybody satisfied.
